Modern Disney

i don't just review movies, i tell what i think about the industry.

do you remember Snow White and the seven dwarfs? the film made in 1937 and was the first colored feature? not only was it cutting edge back then but it was made with the heart that should be in all movies! Walt Disney (winner of 22 Oscars for either himself or his films) genuinely wanted to make a great movie and not just a cash in or a money grubber.
this tradition continued through Cinderella with it beautiful music and enchanting characters, through Sleeping Beauty with its tremendous visuals that may not seem like much compared to box office success' like Avatar but back then (and when i was little) i loved looking at the detail and all the colors! the dress changing color at the end is memorable and truly felt magical AND the music score it has is great!
Even after Walt died there were still good movie's: The Little Mermaid, Mulan, a Bugs Life, Toy Story, The Lion King, Beauty and The Beast and Shrek! there were others but those are the main players, oh! lets not forget Tron!
then came that wretched word: SEQUEL

now i'm not bashing sequels in general, the Toy Story sequel is one of the few that lives up to its predecessor (and i look forward to number 3), Shrek 2 also did that (although i just didn't see it in Shrek 3).
Mulan 2 was manufactured droll, as was the Cinderella sequel's and that thing with Selena Gomez. they were clearly cashing in on great stories and masterpieces of imagination! but dumbing them down, seriously, i reckon that my generation can be dumber than cave men some times.
The Little Mermaid 2 is one that i haven't seen, so i can't comment on that, but i have seen clips, and i can see that they just didn't put all that much work into it. The Lion King had the same plot as William Shakespeare's Hamlet, but i'll let that off because it maybe unoriginal, but Shakespeare in Disney is a stroke of genius! The Lion King 2, was Romeo and Juliet all over, only in the end the lovers don't die, yet another triumph, i didn't like number 3 though, i just didn't feel it.
Disney went down hill in the 90's, works like Mulan and The Lion King were rare and the only thing that is saving Disney is Pixar (extra emphasis on Pixar) Miley Cyrus' legions of tweeny bopping girls, and ugh... The Jonas Brothers. who, BTW brings nothing new or good to the music industry.
but i'll give Disney this: i think that the Tron sequel might be good.

as Walt Disney once said: "i don't like to revisit past success's, i like to move on to something new" or something to that effect. Disney tends to use the same tired stories over and over, only in a new setting or with new actors... that doesn't make it good!!!
High School Musical was bad, the sequels cashed in on kids who didn't know what real musicals were, and probably still don't. The sequel's used different songs and stuff but they were bad songs in the first place! bitter sweet (very bittersweet), over the top and painfully cheesy. i heard that they're making a fourth. why!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

Ever seen Camp Rock? it's one of those movies with an over used and at times non existent plot that cashes in on a popular band (in this case the Jonas Brothers) and makes them act! oh the humanity!!! Joe wasn't too bad but whatever hope he has at an acting career is dashed due to his horrible movie appearances, the JBs are nothing more than box office draws for tween an teen-aged girls who have no lives. and get this: they're making a second one!
Don't even get me started on those twins in The Suite Life series.

yes, i DID watch the Disney channel, but i haven't for sometime, i have a very good memory and happen to remember these things.
Disney is everywhere, they have a theme park that charges too much, mediocre products that spring from the shelves because they have Miley Cyrus's or Zac Efron's picture on them. modern Disney is a heartless organisation that was once great and made movies that had a touch of movie magic, heart and true imagination. Fantasia was a rather long movie with no spoken dialogue, it was all set to beautiful classical music, a heightened bass aould show anger or fear, and treble could show happiness! a true piece of visual and musical art, kids nowadays wont listen/watch to it, but when they're older they'll understand why it is so highly regarded.

they should create a "Classic" Disney channel, because with modern Disney trying so hard to make people watch and/or by their products people so often forget where it all came from.

the films of classic Disney weren't completely original in storyline, BUT it was the execution, the emotion the musical, the voice work and the imagery that made them great and original! look at nowadays. poor execution, poor acting, poor everything! i'd rather see a brilliant Disney adaption rather than an idiotic, SUPPOSEDLY original Disney movie. what about you?

RANT OUT

Cry Baby (1990)

this film star's Johnny Depp and Amy Locane as Wade "Cry Baby" Walker who has the ability to shed a single tear and make girls swoon, and Locane is Allison the 'square' who falls for Cry Baby.

thats the plot, but this film is also a loving spoof of teen angst films in the 50's, and is a musical. by John Waters. yeah, so you know it's gotta have something going for it! don't expect Grease, cos this movie isn't trying to be it. it's its own movie and it has done a pretty good job! the songs are cool, i especially like "Doing time for being young".
this was during that time when Johnny Depp didn't sing so he was dubbed, Locane was dubbed too. but don't you dare think that that takes away from this movie! it's a musical comedy that is worth watching, you wont have this huge enlightenment after watching it, you'll just feel entertained and remember why Johnny Depp is awesome.

Wanda's parents are priceless! obviously spoofing the bittersweet parent that are so PC that they can't see past their noses, and they're just so funny! oh! and when JD sings this song in and Elvis Presley way, its so good! and he was so hot! JD with that hairstyle, he's the perfect cry baby.
it's not Hairspray, but again it's not meant to be. this is a feel good romp that leaves you with a nice feeling at the end of the movie.

acting 3/5. it's nothing special but it's decent.
Story 3/5 understandable and basic, nothing special
songs 3/5 again: nothing new (but hey, it IS set in the 50's) but enjoyable to listen to.
Movie 3 and a half/5 i added the half because its so well done!

it's fun, funny, it has Johnny Depp, good music, a good plot. it has everything and some John Waters charm! nothing special on paper but on but when you watch the movie it has something, think: the fifties revisited and spoofed.
it's a good movie that despite its look of normal is elevated by good humor and you get a good vision on what it is trying to do. and it has succeeded. rent or buy this movie, it's good! there's nothing wrong with it, it's just that its not bad enough to get a 2 and not up to my standards of a 4.

Just Buried (2007)

2007 was pretty good year for film, and this movie probably got lost in the hype of Enchanted, Hairspray and No Country for old men, it may not live it up to the Oscar winning NCFOM, or the bright and bubbly of Enchanted or the music and energy of Hairspray, but this movie isn't meant to. it's twisted with an interesting plot with decent twists in the story to maintain your interest.

Rose Byrne (Damages) and Jay Baruchel (star of the new flick She's out of my league) star as Roberta Knickel and Oliver Whynacht.
Oliver inherits a bankrupt funeral home from his estranged father, only here's the thing: no-one in town is dying. when Oliver accidentally hits a man with his car, he and Roberta scramble to cover it up leading into even more deaths.

this movie was more intriguing than funny, although it did have it's moments, it depends on your sense of humour. It's not a complicated plot, so you won't have to think too much but pay attention just enough so you can go "wow! i didn't expect that!"

for acting: 3/5 the movie didn't really require much, even though most people know how good Rose Byrne is
story: 4/5 interesting, perhaps not as funny as it was intended but still funny.
deaths: 3/5 pretty cool and original, a lagging bit was probably that no-one pegged it was them, even though they left a lot of finger prints. pretty bad murderers, but since its only a movie...
Movie: 3 and a half out of 5

a decent score, not bad not great, its better than a lot of the crap that comes out today.

Jawbreaker (1999)

a dark comedy/crime, this film stars little knowns Rose McGowan, Judy Greer and Julie Benz, there was a third but i didn't really pay that much attention to the credits. this film had an interesting plot and a nice (maybe not "nice" but you get what i mean) take on high school politics, albeit unbelievable.

when a prank on their perfect friend Liz goes wrong (Courtney -Rose McGowan- put a jawbreaker in her mouth on which she subsequently choked on), the 3 remaining friends try to hide the truth, Courtney convinces the other 2 not to got to the cops but the following events make things harder each time.

this movie, had pretty weak acting, which is a shame since it had such a great storyline, i still prefer Heathers (the murders and the characters were more interesting), this movie was clearly meant to be the Heathers of the 90's, and they tried. Heathers had a dark wit with better acting, this movie border lines psychotic at times(and not in a good way), but i'll give it this: the end was fitting, it had some good moments, but what drew it back was that you didn't care for any of the characters, it was obvious that Courtney was the villain so you needn't care about her! But Fern, for one was just such a tool! unlikeable characters aren't good, simple as that. its not that awesome but if you like Marilyn Manson (he has a very brief cameo) then rent this so you can spot him.

acting 2/5 story 4/5 originality 3/5(i can't get over the whole Heathers thing- which BTW is a better movie)
movie 3/5
not bad not awesome, just a good kinda enjoyable (if you like Mean Girls with murder), 2 hours on the couch

Disaster Movie

Disaster Movie was made in 2008, it is a parody movie of... i guess all movies, from HSM to Juno to Enchanted.
this movie is simply a disaster movie, it was unfunny, terrible humor, the jokes are mindless physical gags. i have this friend who doesn't know good movies, he thinks that the greatest movie ever made was The Fast And The Furious! he recommended this film, so i didn't expect much from this movie, all i can say is: TERRIBLE! i know that its supposed to be a parody movie, but aren't parody movies meant to be funny? i'm not big on the more recent parody movies, Epic Movie wasn't great but it was funnier than this. Give me Hot Shots, not another teen movie and scary movie! they were at least funny!

again, i know that it is a parody film but is that any reason to have such horrible acting, directing, writing and lame cameos? no! parodies are meant to be funny, if not hilarious! if you want real spoofs you should check out the ones i mentioned above, and maybe even French and Saunders on Youtube, i recommend the Star Wars spoof, very funny. this movie was not, i hate HSM but put that next to this movie and HSM looks like it deserved an Oscar!

i urge you no to see this movie!
acting 1/5 story 1/5 spoofs 0/5
movie 0/5

i have seen bad movies, and bad spoofs, but NEVER have i seen a parody movie that didn't make me at least snicker, this movie is the worst movie ever made by anyones standards!

Heathers (1988)

I first found this movie when i was looking up Mean Girls, then someone in on the message board said that this movie was a watered down version of Heathers, i now see that it was VERY watered down. Heathers destroys Mean Girls in my opinion, with that wit and darkness, there are seldom teen movies nowadays that portray high schoolers as intelligent human beings who recognize a copy of Moby Dick or The Bell Jar, without Heathers there would be no Jawbreaker, no Mean Girls and definably NO Juno.

This movie is one of my favorites, it's an escape, twisted at times but a brilliant satire on high school life that you can still relate to today. it's a satirical semi spoof of high school slasher film (most notably: Massacre at central high. a cult horror flick) adding wit and intelligence to what could have easily been a film made in bad taste.
no movie would dare do what this film did, not in this post Columbine world, but for anyone unaffected by that tragedy or loves dark comedy, or Christian Slater or Winona Ryder, this movie is for you.

Veronica Sawyer (Ryder) is part of the 'in' crowd at school, but doesn't like her company, the 3 heathers (Played by Lisanne Falk, Shannon Doherty and Kim Walker). Then she meets Jason Dean (Slater), who helps her out, by killing the popular kids and starting a "suicide epidemic" at the school.

this movie has some truly classic lines that i just love to say, what kid hasn't thought about killing the bullies of the school? for every twisted mind, or comedy lover (or just lover of the actors in this) i recommend this movie, you will not be disappointed.

5/5 for story 3/5 acting (Slaters Jack Nicholson impression grates at times) 4/5 for darkness
movie: 4/5

10 things i hate about you

made in 1999, this kovie stars the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles as patrick Verona and Katerina Stratford. loosley based on William Shakespeares "The Taming of the shrew", this movie has the right blend of romance, comedy and drama, with likeable charcters and a nice portrayal of high school, even though in HS a girl will seldom get her patrick, but oh it's nice to dream....

the soundtrack is awesome! i swear that downloaded a whole bunch of songs from this movie. Seriously.
Acting is great and i felt tears i my eyes during the poem that Kat reads, so great. well round characters, with Joseph Gorden-Levitt, Larrisa Oleynik and Allsion Janney in support.
this an hysterically funny movie that you can really get into, fun and romantic, anyone can watch it.

acting- 4/5 soundtrack- 4/5 story- 4/5
movie-4/5
this movie is great, but there are some pop culture referances that some people won't understand, but i doubt that nobody has a slight inkling about who Chuchi is.
